What Your Day Will Look Like

As an Intermediate Archaeologist, you will oversee and direct permitted archaeological field programs, ensuring full compliance with regulatory and project-specific requirements while maintaining high professional standards. You are either a BC field director in at least one of the three culture areas (or have demonstrated eligibility), or are eligible to hold a permit in the Yukon, and will lead and supervise field crews on heritage resource projects, manage daily operations to ensure work is completed safely and on schedule, and maintain organization of equipment, materials, and documentation. You’ll provide training, mentorship, and constructive feedback to junior archaeologists and technicians, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and effective conflict resolution in the field.

What You’ll be Responsible for

  • Direct field programs under permit, ensuring compliance with regulatory and project-specific requirements, collaborating and communicating with permit holders and project managers.
  • Lead and supervise field crews on heritage resource projects (archaeological excavations, surveys, site assessments etc.).
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the field crew, ensuring tasks are completed safely, on time, and to the highest professional standards.
  • Apply knowledge of provincial/ territorial regulatory frameworks to ensure projects comply with all relevant archaeological and heritage legislation, policies, and permitting requirements at provincial/territorial and federal levels.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough recording of archaeological data, following permit/ project methodologies.
  • Manage and maintain complete, legible, and well-organized field documentation, ensuring that field notes and spatial data are uploaded promptly to meet project deadlines.
  • Review notes and spatial data for all crews under direction to ensure data collection is complete, comprehensive, and accurate, and the work was done to the correct standards.
  • Develop and review archaeological permit applications, impact assessments, management plans, final reports, etc.
  • Fostering positive relationships with local communities, Indigenous groups, governmental agencies and other partners.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and working collaboratively within Ecofor’s corporate culture.

What Will Help You Succeed:

Our ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field, and brings four to ten years of experience in cultural resource management, including demonstrated leadership in supervisory or field lead roles. You have proven experience writing and editing technical reports and are able to produce clear, accurate documentation that meets professional and regulatory standards. Your background includes, or you are eligible for, active Field Director status in at least one culture area under the BC Archaeology Branch, eligibility to hold a Yukon archaeological permit as a junior Permit Holder, or equivalent credentials in other jurisdictions. A combination of relevant education and practical experience may be considered to support success in this role.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology or a related field of study.
  • Active Field Director status (or eligibility) in at least one culture area under the BC Archaeology Branch (e.g., Interior Plateau, Northwest Coast, Subarctic)
  • Four (4) to 10 years of experience in cultural resource management, including supervisory or field lead roles.
  • Permit holder eligibility in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing technical reports. Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in archaeological fieldwork.
  • Strong working knowledge of the provincial/territorial heritage regulatory environment in British Columbia and/or Yukon, or other jurisdictions.
  • Experience with handheld GPS units, mapping software, pedestrian survey, subsurface testing, excavation and systematic data collection and field note taking.
  • Skilled in recording archaeological data clearly and accurately under tight timelines.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills in field-based decision making, with the ability to motivate and guide field staff and address challenges.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage field responsibilities while maintaing high standards for themselves and others for safety and data integrity.
  • Ability to work in challenging environmental conditions and physically demanding situations.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Position requires: Criminal Record Check, Valid Driver’s License

Language Requirement: Fluent in English

Wage Range: This is an hourly position with a target hiring range of $39.16 to $48.18 per year. Final placement within this range will typically be between the minimum and midpoint and is determined based on each candidate’s unique combination of skills, knowledge, experience, and abilities. We also consider factors such as market conditions and internal equity to support fair and transparent compensation practices.

Location: The successful candidates must reside in or be willing to move to one of the locations mentioned above.
